Can you take ambien and neurontin together?

I was prescribed ambien for a sleep disorder and neurontin for nerve pain in my spine. I am just worried about these medications clashing. I would like to know if it is ok or not. I read the side effects for neurontin, and they are not too pleasant. My doctor thinks that the benefits outweigh the risks.
